Today marks the first Sunday of Advent, which means the countdown to Christmas can now begin without seeming overly premature!

On this day, Swedes around the world will be lighting their first advent candle. The first candle is allowed to burn down by one quarter. On the following Sunday the second candle is lit, and so on, until by the fourth Sunday the first candle has burnt right down and the last one has been lit. This ritual and countdown heightens the anticipation of the big day, particularly for the children of the family.  This day typically also marks the beginning of Christmas celebrations and traditions, including the first Christmas dinners, consumption of glögg and Christmas baking. This is typically a Swedish tradition but it does also take place in other parts of Scandinavia.

So whether you will be lighting an advent candle or not, now is the time to get celebrating with some glögg, friends, family and food!
